Saddle Up! Reflections from Calistoga

There are weekends that look good in photos…

And then there are weekends that quietly remind you what life is actually about.

This was more the second kind.

No big agenda.
No pressure.
No need to perform or be “on.”

Just a few days in Calistoga with good people, good wine, a lot of laughs, and conversations that didn’t need to accomplish anything to matter.

Somewhere in the middle of all of it, this photo happened.

Not posed.
Not planned.
Just one of those moments.

And sitting there with my hat pulled down, half in the light and half in the quiet, I had one of those thoughts that feels really simple… but also really true:

At some point in life, you stop trying to figure everything out so much…And you just step into it.

I think a lot of us spend years waiting.

Waiting for the timing to be right.
Waiting to feel more certain.
Waiting until life feels more lined up, more secure, more clear.

But honestly, some of the best moments I’ve had in life never arrived that way. They came from saying yes:

Yes to the invitation.
Yes to the trip.
Yes to the dinner.
Yes to the unexpected conversation.
Yes to just being fully present with the people right in front of you.

And maybe that’s part of the problem…

Maybe we spend too much of life holding the reins too tightly.

Trying to control the outcome…

Trying to predict where everything is headed. Trying to make sure we don’t get hurt, fail, look foolish, or lose our footing.

But life rarely opens up that way.

And the moments that really stay with us usually happen somewhere between letting go a little… and showing up anyway.

So, maybe that’s what “saddle up” really means.

Not pretending to be fearless.
Not acting tough.
Not having it all figured out.

Just being willing to step into life fully while it’s happening.

To show up, to take the moment in.
And to let life meet you there.

Because at this stage, I’m realizing it’s not really about building a life that looks impressive from the outside.

It’s about building one that genuinely feels like yours when you wake up in the morning.

Freedom Always!
